This spring, I was the sole developer for creating a WordPress publishing tool for billion-dollar education policy foundation. For the last six years, they have been using a custom MVC PHP framework, and we aided their transition into the era of responsive designs and ability to manage their own content.
By using a custom taxonomy, I was able to create an issue-based system of templates which keeps the header and footer consistent from issue to issue, as well as an index page for each issue which only displays related content. Each issue has custom fields that populate the appropriate sections of the templates.
It was important that the foundation didn’t lose the last six years of issues, so I worked to place the past issues on the server to match both the current url scheme as well as not break backwards compatibility. All 24 issues now live on in the archive section.
